Sealants provide a protective barrier to both primary and permanent teeth. The sooner that these sealants can be applied to erupted teeth the better. Oral fluids, ingested sugars and bacterial exposure to decay prone tooth pits and fissures can cause premature tooth decay. Scientific evidence is very clear that sealants are the best protection available to prevent tooth decay in addition to the application of fluoride and the use of fluoridated water.
